EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Microsoft’s acquisition of Skype raised a lot of eyebrows throughout the industry. Analysts remain unclear as to why Microsoft bought Skype. We believe that Microsoft has many reasons to buy Skype, one being that telephony of the future is very likely to be built on a platform like Skype. We expect to see a fast transition in the next few years to flexible call routing between phones and devices.

Local.com’s acquisition of Krillion, and EBay’s recent acquisition of Milo, all reflect a mega-trend of local search systems searching store products in-stock. We believe that product search is likely to become a primary element of mobile search and that we’ll see further consolidation in the area..

A Google research presentation revealed a seven-element vision of cellphone NFC. Several of these elements are already launched by Google, while others (such as device-to-device connectivity) are not yet. We show areas that Google is likely to move into, and show that NFC tags can blend very closely with cloud computing services and content.
