EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Nokia launched a new trial in solar-powered cellphone use, experimenting with the efficiency of their test units in practical use. This is part of a broader trend of Nokia trying to bring research to market, which they have recently failed to do, and also to bring a new cellphone revolution to market in order to salvage their market position. We analyze solar technologies being researched by Nokia and others.

Mobile-related acquisitions this week include a very interesting acquisition by EBay that we think will impact heavily on location-based commerce, along with over 30 other mobile-related acquisitions. Many of these relate to “daily deals” sites and to NFC/RFID technologies.

Apple made a lot of announcements this month, including a revolutionary location-based reminders system, integrated messaging, cloud services, Twitter integration, and more. At the same time, Google announced their Google+ package of social networking systems, which includes revolutionary group video chat and several mobile-related and location-related features.
