Grizzly Mobile Monthly - Sept 1, 2011
Analyzing trends from August 2011

This report was sent to customers on September 1, analyzing technology trend developments in August. For more information on our subscriptions e-mail sales@grizzlyanalytics.com.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Three companies were acquired this month in the area of location-based deals promotions. This is part of a larger trend of deals moving from e-mail subscription to mobile location. Until now, mobile location-based access to promotions has primarily been “pulled” by users, who ask to be shown nearby promotions on a map. We predict that this will move to a “push” model, where users are notified of nearby promotions as they move around and navigate to their destinations.

The current consolidation in mobile OS platforms is hurting systems that have less 3rd-party applications than the leading systems. This is one reason for recent circumstances of HP’s WebOS, RIM, Symbian and MeeGo. We explore uses of mobile platforms that may succeed even with fewer 3rd-party apps.

NFC tag printing is getting to the stage where NFC tags can be produced cheaply and in large quantities. We look at the companies in that industry and the new trends in how these tags can be used for non-payment NFC applications.

We believe that Steve Jobs left Apple with his influence already given for the next technologies in Apple’s pipeline. We present our reasons for speculating, based on Apple research, that this includes embedded projectors, eyeglass displays, LED styluses, and solar powered phones.
